Sportsanista

From the archives: November 2012

As every Sportsanista knows, check the final stretch of the NFL season is enough to make even the savviest sportsanista’s head spin. From worrying about making the playoffs, stuff to what in the hell to wear as the stakes (and crowds) on Game Day Sundays heat up…there’s a lot to looking the part and knowing the game this time of year.

The great thing about being a Chicago sports fan is that when it comes to fashion, pretty much anything goes. With the Bears leading the NFC North at 8-3, you could rock a Bears tee in the formalist of occasions, without getting too many strange looks. To prove this point, I’ve paired this adorable Sporty Threads boatneck Bear’s tee with pieces that are on trend for fall and winter that are functional and comfortable for any situation…..and I mean ANY…..going to the game, watching the game at a bar or a friend’s house, a shopping date, girls night out, Friday night cocktails…whatever your little heart desires.

Pairing any shirt five ways requires pushing the fashion limits and taking a few risks….are you with me? Think leather, fur, military jackets, colored denim, shorts and patterned tights. My best kept fashion secret? For unexpected variety, try wearing the shirt backwards. Yes, this is me being serious and it was easy with this edgy “Monsters of the Midway” script displayed on the back side.  I mean every team has two sides….offense and defense, so why shouldn’t fashion?

buy cialis Sports, shop Beer ” src=”http://sportsdivasinc.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_2308-1024×682.jpg” alt=”” width=”350″ height=”233″ />Next to fashion, my next three favorite things (in no specific order) just happen to be: bacon, beer and sports.  So when the guys over at BaconSports.com, a sports comedy site that incorporates all three, announced they were throwing a party, attending the inaugural event was an absolute no-brainer.

This Saturday was the first annual Bacon, Sports and Beer Celebration. Not only did this celebration make be feel all warm and fuzzy from the blustery (abnormally) cold Chicago temperatures, it was also in my backyard at Union Station’s Great Hall. It was a wedding for beer, bacon and sports and I was happy to get an invite.

Every inch of the walls in the Great Hall were covered with some of the cities hottest restaurants bacon creations, beer tastings from craft breweries and sport themed games. Three words – Pop-A-Shot. I now have your attention. Guests were encouraged to sport their “most random” jersey or sports attire. Similar to a prom where a king and queen are crowned, there was a Bacon Bro and a Bacon Babe. Aside from a man dressed in a San Francisco 49’ers suit and the best damn Ditka impersonator I’ve ever seen, a majority of the crowd was sporting jerseys, tees and sweatshirts. While I was working, I had to participate in some way, otherwise what kind of Sportsanista would I be?!

Paired with my Pagie Denim coated black skinnies and taupe suede over-the-knee boots from Nine West, I wore this amazing Nameless stripped button-up, I found at Shopbop.com. This shirt is proof that fashion and sports can live harmoniously. I digress….

As soon as we walked in to the event, I immediately went into Quarterback mode. I assessed the defensive set-up and landed on a play that would get the ball into the end zone. In laments terms, I created a route for myself to sample the most food and beer, sprinkled with a minor photo-shoot and short game of pop-a-shot.

Kitchen Surfing, a private chef service, was one of the most memorable booths with their cheddar bacon drop biscuits with bacon jam. The hospitality of Chef Dustin Smallheer was just as amazing as the bacon jam. Next I sampled some baked macaroni and cheese with bacon crumble from Market BarThe portion was as big as my head, but I wasn’t mad at it.

After all of the bacon indulgent, I needed something to wash it down. I walked on over to the Magic Hat booth to sample their chocolate stout – Heart of Darkness. Chocolate beer? I say yes! I’m the kind of girl who needs some sweet with my savory. On my way to the pop-a-shot I scooped up a deviled egg with buffalo sauce sprinkled with bacon bits for extra confidence. Turns out a deviled egg topped with bacon does not help your shot, but we were all winners that day, right?

After making a full lap around the premises, it was time to hit up the Action Booth, a photographer service that puts the photobooth to shame. The photographer made me jump in 5-inch heels. He said jump, I said how high! The photo below is probably one of my favorite take-aways from the event!

My second favorite take-away of the event, was BaconSports.com’s commitment to give Chicago Cares, a Chicago based volunteer program charity, at least $5,000 of all ticket proceeds. Chicagoians helping Chicagoians, love it!

Now what’s a party without a parting gift? In a recyclable shopping bag each guest received the following items: Vosges chocolate, $50 Nakewines.com Gift card, Bacon marinade from Tongue Spank Spice Company, coupon to Kitchen Surfing (something I WILL use), coupons to Frontier and a gift card to apply to Box of Paradise’s one year subscription.

I judge every party by the happiness of my stomach and the contents I leave with. The Bacon, Sports and Beer celebration was the perfect winter Saturday antidote. Job well done.

MLB Spring Fashion

Hello my dear Sportsanistas! It feels like ages since we’ve last spoken. Let us not think about the past, click but the future, and the future brings us baseball fashion.

As we have witnessed in these first few weeks of the early season, anything goes. From sun and warmth, to sleet and snow. One must be extremely conscious of the weather particularly in these early baseball months, all while effectively incorporating today’s trends to their game day gear; oh the conundrum of having to look cute when its cold. However, women of Chicago have mastered the art of dressing in cold weather..mother nature gives us plenty of practice.

Today I’m going to highlight my favorite pieces of Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox apparel for spring.  It goes without saying in these unpredictable months…layers, layers, layers.

Lets get to the starting line-up…

Fashion this spring is all about color! Bright, vibrant, neon colors! I’m LOVING this neon tee from Clark Street Sports.  Pair it with a military green jacket for those chilly spring games and you’ll definitely stand out in the crowd.

Clark Street Sports, $34.99

You can’t go wrong with this vintage throw back Sox tee with the iconic Batterman logo from the ’80s. Glam in up with a leather jacket and some new Nike wedges and you’ll be ready to head out on the town after a Sox victory at the Cell.

Clark Street Sports, $34.99

In the spirit of keeping things bright, pair this heathered grey and Carolina blue baseball Cubs tri-blend tee with a pair of mint or coral skinnies! Match them up with a nude flat, maybe even one with a bow and you’ve got yourself a triple play.

Clark Street Sports, $34.99

Let’s continue with color, shall we? This classic zip-up Sox sweatshirt with a vintage feel pairs perfectly with just about any colored bottom. Red, mint green and yellow skinnies would finish the look off with the perfect lady-like touch. For an extra bold look, pair with spring’s floral denim trend. Just because the flowers around the Cell aren’t blooming yet, doesn’t mean you can’t.

Clark Street Sports, $54.99

Who doesn’t love fashion AND function? The folks at Nike are back at it with this Cubs track jacket that doubles up as a fashion statement with it’s vintage logo and track jacket cut. The functionality comes to play with strategically placed holes for your earphones.

Clark Street Sports, $60.00

Remember lettermen jackets from your varsity playing days? Well, leave it to the folks at Nike to make it new again and help us work it into our modern game day look.  I love this new twist on a trendy, vintage lettermen’s jacket to serve as outwear for a game under the lights. Pair this with a simple white v-neck, pegged denim and some nude pumps. Can you run to third wearing pumps? I can.

Clark Street Sports, $74.99

Well Sportsanistas, that is all she wrote. While we wait for spring to arrive, hopefully somewhere in my words you found some inspiration for your next game day look! PLAY BALL!

One Hawks Tee: 5 Ways to Wear It

The Sportsanista is back at it again to talk Chicago sport fashion – and specifically, search Blackhawk fashion! Back in October, when our city was convinced the Bears were heading to the Super Bowl, I showed you how to wear a Sporty Threads’ Bears t-shirt five ways. Well, the Bears’ season didn’t turn out the way we had hoped, but we sure had fun rocking the Bears’ look all season long.

This time, we are back at it again with another fabulous Sporty Thread’s find and donning the look for what else, the red-hot Blackhawks.

With the Chicago Blackhawks breaking franchise and NHL records left and right, there’s never been a better time to show your pride and support the Hawks’ ridiculous win streak than with a killer look. Nothing says “go get ’em boys” quite like a vintage Hawks tee, some leather leggings and pumps!

Sporty Threads, $32.99

This Chicago Blackhawks vintage v-neck tee from Sporty Threads ($32.99) has so much versatility to anchor any look; and you guessed it, I’m going to show you how! Just remember, as we did last time, we are going to have to take some fashion risks here, but don’t worry….we will do them together. Shall we?

LOOK #1: Casual Friday at Work

It’s March, which means Spring has sprung, or at least in my mind it has, and these pants are bright enough they’d put Puxatony Phil right back in his hole. Floral print pants are all the rage this Spring, so if all the cool kids are doing it, so should you! Pair them with a nude pump to off set the pattern in the pants and logo in the shirt. Nothing like a made to order Casual Friday look for work!

Pants: Ann Taylor LOFT (AND on Sale!) | Pumps: Steve Madden

LOOK #2: A Night Out on the Town/Game-day at the United Center

The hottest trend we have seen all year are leather pants. There is nothing more sleek and attractive than a great pair of these bad boys! This look has ease and comfort, but that’s a secret no one needs to know!

The clear pumps are all sorts of amazing and another trend this Spring. It’s a no fuss, on-trend look, to wear for a night out on the town with your friends. I say, be daring and wear this look to a game….you might just melt the ice.

Pumps: Lori’s Designer Shoes | Pants: Ann Taylor

LOOK #3: Heading to the grocery store or the Mall? Have Tommy Hawk come with!

Is there a dress code for shopping at the mall or grocery store? No, but there should be on some occasions. Here is a great way to dress up your Hawks tee, but not by over doing it. The white tuxedo blazer is added in for a level of sophistication and to give you some shape! Pair the blazer and tee with a pair of distressed denim to add some edge, and top it off with some mint pumps; now that’s a cherry on top! Tis the season for color!

Pumps: Forever 21 | Blazer: Aryn K(similar)

LOOK #4: Warrior One Pose in a Hawks Tee

Headed to the gym or a yoga class? Trade in your Lululemon tank for the Hawks tee. The cotton is super lightweight, and great for any workout.  Finish the look off with some flare like a military-esque jacket, a skull patterned scarf and of course, some flashy NIKE’s. Guarantee you that everyone will ask you where your outfit is from – or at least give you a “Go HAWKS”!

Scarf: Nordstroms | Jacket: Gap (similar)

LOOK #5: Let’s Brunch

Brunching: A glutenous combo of breakfast and lunch, consumed late morning, early afternoon, all while being fashion forward.

To live in Chicago, means you partake in a brunch affair at least once a week. With Spring (the real spring) just around the corner…and the snow slowly melting….start prepping your spring brunch looks with the Hawks tee in mind. The tee gives the look a casual edge…how do you like that word combo? Pink, lace, denim, and the Hawks, Oh My! This look would work well with a bright skirt or a neutral color skirt. If you go the neutral skirt route, I suggest you add a bright pump for an extra kick in your step!

Skirt: H&M (similar) | Denim Shirt: Banana Republic (similar) | Belt: H&M (similar)

This week Nike Training Club brought fashion and sport – hello!? two of my absolute favorite things – together for a celebration of fitness and style at Soldier Field.  Featuring celebrity NTC trainer Marie Purvis, viagra sale and a fashion show hosted by Brittney Payton (Walter Payton’s daughter) and Kristin Cavallari; the show featured pieces from Nike’s new Hyperwarm line and Holiday Collection. When someone says to me that fashion and sport are about to have babies, medical I say, pills how do I become the godmother of that child!?

For a night of fitness and fashion, my girlfriends and I got dressed in our Nike best and snuggled up in some winter wear to bear the 30 degree temps of Chicago. After 30 minutes of continuous leg work repetitions from celeb trainer Marie Purvis, we all ran indoors like we were fleeing from running bulls knowing that warmth….and wine, were on the other side. Let me just tell you, I’m having some serious issues walking up and down stairs, or just plain walking more or less……Marie Puvis did WURK on us! It’s never to early to start preparing for bikini season.

Once inside, and a glass of wine in hand, we patiently waited for the show to start. I was giddy like a little school girl to see what Nike had to offer for this season’s trends and fitness wear. So here is how my review started….”Um…did Nike really make a platform sneaker?!…I thought those died out with platform  Sketchers”. Then, as the show progressed……”Gurl, I need me some of those Nike plats!!” For real, don’t judge; as the models kept walking by, they were sending subliminal messages….“Nike plats, Nike plats…”.

What I loved most about the show is that Nike put together creative pieces that are functional for both fitness and fashion; it was a new twist on the yoga pant and tank. Colors were mixed, patterns were mismatched and I was sold! My favorite piece of the night, aside from the Nike plat, had to be the Nike Pro Hyperwarm print pant; wear them to the gym, to the grocery store, underneath your ski pants….wherever you are, you will have the most dope pants on!

Here are my top five pieces from the event, including the poncho Kristin Cavallari was rocking! For a full recap on the event itself, check out Monica’s review posted yesterday by clicking here! Have a great weekend!

Top Five Pieces:

Nike Dunk Sky High Shoes

Nike Exo Poncho

Nike Pro Hyperwarm Print Pant

Nike Downtown Epic Crew

Nike Beautility Duffle Bag

Vest: Gap (similar); Scarf: Cheeky Peach…..they now have a website!!; Jacket: Nike (similar); Pants: Nike; Shoes: Nike

Good day Sportsanistas! After a week of sulking and mourning over my Mountaineer’s loss, ampoule I’m ready to get back into the football spirit, and nothing puts me more in the football mood than a night game under the lights!

Monday Night Football is back in Chicago!  Today the Detroit Lions come to town to battle the Monsters of the Midway for the second of three Bear’s appearances on Monday Night Football this year.  The Bears have had 15 days of rest between their bye week and their win against Jacksonville in Week 6.  The long wait in between Bears games has fans eager and the city pumped up with energy for Monday Night Football on the lakefront.

Football on a school night?! What could be better?! Better yet…….what does one wear to a late October night game? Since I work gamedays at Soldier Field, I don’t  get to indulge much in Chicago Bears Fashion when it’s a home game. I’m all business casualed out….styled to a T of course!

This week, since I won’t be able to wear my gameday look at work, I thought I’d check out a few new looks for game night. Night games are a whole different animal than day games. It’s the struggle of trying to look cute and wearing supportive colors…all while NOT trying to look like the brother from A Christmas Story. Really, the priority here is fashion. Beauty is pain, remember that.

Here I used the puffer vest as my staple and paired it with two options for a night game…..What’s 50 degrees in a dress when you have boots to mind the gap….easy peasy! OR try the equestrian look with denim and a gingham top! Winner winner chicken dinner!

What will you be wearing to your Monday night game?  Tweet us your game day looks at @chisportsdivas!

LOOK ONE: Dress: Banana Republic (similar); Vest: Jcrew (similar); Boots: Pour La Victorie (similar); Socks; Urban Outfitters; Belt: Banana Republic (similar)

LOOK TWO: Top: Gap (similar); Vest: Same as Above; Belt: Same as Above; Boots: Same as Above: Denim: Easy Money; Necklace: H&M
