Anthony Davis

The holidays are here and that means food, drugstore family and football.  No wait, this is Christmas and that means food, family and BASKETBALL.  It’s easy to get confused because Christmas is to the NBA what Thanksgiving is the NFL.  An annual tradition that dates back to 1947 of all day basketball folly.  In 2011, the slate of games grew to 5, tipping off at 11am, and has stayed as large and as long ever since.

This year we’re looking at anything and everything from coast to coast match ups, a Finals rematch (or preview), East vs. West face-offs, and a Staples Center showdown, all complete with the requisite NBA Christmas uniforms, which I am not mad about this year.

If you’re looking to pick and choose when to watch vs. when to eat, sleep or spend time with the fam, here’s the game by game rundown.

11am CT New Orleans at Miami

A match up of the somewhat surprisingly intriguing Heat vs. the under performing Pelicans.  The Brow is always a fun watch and seeing him take on Hassan Whiteside in the paint shouldn’t disappoint.  But New Orleans is ravaged by injuries and an inability to adjust to the new coaching staff.  While I’m much more partial to New Orleans for eating, drinking and dancing, I’d pick Miami in this one.

1:30pm CT Chicago at OKC

The NBA so wanted Derrick Rose vs. Russell Westbrook to mean what it used to.  Unfortunately three knee surgeries has taken its toll on one much more than the other.  Despite this, the Bulls beat the Thunder earlier in the season behind a great game from Rose, who has since lost his facemask, the height of his hair, and his shot.  Both teams are playing under new head coaches who made the jump from college ball, but OKC is surging, while the Bulls count their lucky playoffs stars that they’re in the East.  I want to take the Bulls to turn it around and bring this one home because they always seem to surprise me on Christmas but without Joakim Noah, I have little faith this holiday season.

4pm CT Cleveland at Golden State

Get out the eggnog early because this is going to be good.  You can call it a Finals rematch or a Finals preview, but the top teams in each conference are at full strength with Cleveland seeing the return of Kyrie Irving this week, and they’re about to go at it.  Golden State boasts one of the best crowds in the NBA, who have been getting to games an hour early just see Steph Curry warm up.  And Lebron, well he’s mad.  Golden State makes history with every win so I’m picking the Warriors, if only to hope for a Riley Curry sighting at the post game press conference.

7:00pm CT San Antonio at Houston

Eat dinner quickly so you can be on the couch for an in-state battle of two completely opposite teams.  The Spurs quietly have the second best record in the NBA with only two less wins than the Warriors.  Pop is still sitting during games since it’s not April, and Kawhi Leonard shows us nightly how much bigger, stronger and faster he is than other top shooting guards in the league.  He’ll face another one in James Harden on Friday, but Harden’s Rockets have not done anything quietly this season.  Already working with an interim head coach and Dwight Howard trade rumors, the Rockets have been incredibly mediorcre so far, and outright bad at times.  They are however coming off of a 3 game win streak and have the talent to put on a show at home.  But if NBA fans know one thing, it’s to never bet against the Spurs.

9:00pm CT Los Angeles at Los Angeles

Many family Christmas gatherings may be able to relate to this match up – two passive aggressive siblings, living under the same roof, cut from the same cloth, with so little in common on any level.  On one end of the floor, the Lakers are a mess.  In the midst of the Kobe retirement tour, they boast two young stars in the making in Randle and Russell, who go in and out of the lineup for no apparent reason.  Kobe may score 34 points, or he may have 3 or 4 air balls.  Meanwhile, the Clippers are as good as they’ve ever been, but it doesn’t look to be good enough.  Their team is filled with controversial players who have never made it quite as far as they should have, and it doesn’t look like they ever will after the first few months of the season.  Kobe will be looking to go out with a bang in his 16th Christmas game, but I’d still take the Clippers to use the holiday to get their season back on track, as they continue to chase the shadow of the Warriors.

And that’s a wrap on Santa’s gift to all NBA fans this year.  Wishing you a very merry NBA Christmas, from our SDI family to yours!

Damien Lillard

This past weekend New Orleans was a fabulous melting pot of hoops and HOT fashion as NBA players, cialis celebrities and public figures alike came together to partake in various Big Easy festivities surrounding the annual All-Star Weekend.

There was so much fashion throughout the weekend that I’ve dedicated the entire Courtside Chic to highlighting some of the best – and worst – looks of the weekend. Let’s get to it.
Sprite All-Star Celebrity Game

The festive weekend kicked off on Friday, drugstore February 13th on TNT with the Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, prostate  where comedian Kevin Hart was voted  the MVP for the third consecutive year. He insisted, however, that Arne Duncan take the award because of his impressive double-double performance. The former Chicago Public School CEO definitely schooled everyone on the court with his 20 points, 11 assists and 6 rebounds.

K. Hart was also spotted with Drake, sporting a Yves Saint Laurent top under a black leather jacket. The platinum selling rapper and Toronto Raptors brand ambassador opted for a laid-back look, wearing a Toronto Raptors T-Shirt and a snap-back hat.

Damian Lillard’s Hot Three Piece Suit

Damian Lillard is on fire! Sure, he became the first player to ever compete in five events. I understand that this is a big deal, but that fabulous suit is an even bigger deal! The 2013 Rookie of the Year was seen sporting a ALBA Legacy custom three-piece suit that looked like it was tailored by the gods themselves. The only thing that I love ore than an athlete in a suit…is an athlete in a custom suit.

Lillard competed in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge on Friday, the Taco Bell Skills Challenge, Foot Locker 3-Point Contest and Sprite Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday and the All-Star Game on Sunday.

Chris Bosh’s Clean-Cut Ensemble, Giant Birkin Bag

chris bosh all star weekend

At the Sear’s Shooting Stars event on Saturday, Team Bosh beat Team Durant and won the event at NBA All-Star Weekend for the second consecutive year. Chris Bosh, along with NBA great Dominique Wilkins and WNBA star Swin Cash finished with a time of 31.4 seconds in the finals, while Team Durant finished with a lagging 43.6 seconds.

The Sears Shooting Stars champ was seen sporting camo pants and a navy blue jacket with a perfectly pressed white button-up shirt. How much do you want to bet that Mario Chalmers is hiding in that giant Birkin bag?

I was just waiting for Paul George to pull out a sword and use it to formulate the letter ‘Z’. The Pacers guard’s Zorro inspired ensemble was from Phenom 247 Clothing.

Anthony Davis’ Suit and Kicks

Anthony Davis was selected as a replacement for Kobe Bryant this weekend. I must say, he is really starting to step up from his ‘jeans and hoodie’ getup. The New Orleans forward/center styled a tan suit with ‘Olive’ Air Jordan 9 sneakers. By the way…stop making fun of his eye brows. They’re here to stay.

Now…you know that I cannot talk about NBA fashion without mentioning Kevin Durant. KD executes effortless style, even in fabulous suits. Here, he rocks two custom Phenom247 suits.

Lebron’s GQ Bash

Guess who is gracing the cover of March’s issue of GQ? It is none other than LeBron James. What better time to celebrate than All Star Weekend? Athletes and celebrities brought their impeccable style to the celebration. Is it me…or does everything seem to be coming up ‘LeBron?’

Even President Obama spoke wonders about James during a TNT interview with Charles Barkley.

“You know LeBron, I know LeBron,” Obama said. “When you’re standing next to him and then watch him close up, I’ve never seen someone that size, that fast, who can jump that high, who’s that strong…Mike [Jordan] will always be the guy for me just because that was a magical moment for the city and he was a champion. But now that he’s retired, LeBron…might be able to play at a high level for another seven, eight, 10 years…”  (SB Nation)

Don’t LeBron and Savannah James look like they belong on top of a wedding cake? LeBron rocked a unique turquoise, paisley jacket with black lapels and Savannah looks beautiful and chic in a flower-patterned lace top with long, flowing, black gown.

By the way…is that a baby bump that I’m seeing? When the James’ make their baby announcement…remember you heard it here first!

dwayne wade and gabrielle union

I still need to think of a cute combo-name for Dwyane and Gabby. Anyway, the recently engaged couple looked Fab in black with Gabby in an embellished black dress and Dwyane in a three-piece suit.

Pharrell’s All Star Sunday Pregame Performance

(USA Today)

Ladies and gentlemen…Pharrell’s Hat! Oh, and Pharrell was there too. The hat and the hit-maker gave a wave-making, pre-game performance along with Snoop, Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs and Busta Rhymes.

Kyrie Irving named All-Star MVP

After a close fourth quarter, the East ultimately dominated in a 163-155 win. Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving was named All-Star MVP. The point guard scored 31 points and 14 assists. He did it all in his green Nike All-Star kicks!

Well, I had a fabulous time watching the All-Star events. I’m kind of bummed that it’s over. Nonetheless, I will be back next week to keep you fabulously posted with more NBA Style. Until then, Divas!

Happy Friday Sportsanistas! Who is ready for some Friday Fashion? I know I am!! This week was the debut of former ESPN side-line reporter Erin Andrews at her new gig on FOX for the MLB All-Star Game.  The following day celebrities and athletes gathered at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the ESPYs to honor athletes that have made memorable moments and careers this past season. Pull up a chair and grab a pen, help because we are talking fashion.

Erin Andrews.…why have you heard this name before? Do you have a boyfriend, viagra husband or friend that watches college sports? Then without a doubt she has come up in conversation as the “hot blonde” who works for ESPN.  She also survived a peeping Tom scandal when video of her undressing in a hotel room was strategically placed on the internet.  Also a Dancing With the Stars vet, ampoule Andrews, who spent eight years as a sideline reporter at ESPN, was recently hired to host a 30-minute prime time college football pre-game show on competitor FOX. This will be the first year that FOX will host a regular-season college football package with Erin Andrews’s show anchoring it on September 1st, the official kick-off weekend of college football; God Bless it and it couldn’t come any sooner!

Erin Andrews former ESPN sideline reporter

Her first day on the job was earlier this week at the MLB All-Star game in Kansas City, MO. This was Erin’s first time reporting since she left ESPN…..and what did she wear? She topped off a pair of dark denim pants, paired with a green fitted blazed and a floral printed blouse. Overall the green blazer compliments her look well making her look strong and confident. To replicate this look check out this green blazer from and this polka dot blouse by Vintage Havana; I went with polka dots versus flowers in the event you aren’t a girly girl like me.  How cute is that polka dot blouse?   I just bought it the other day and have been sitting by my mailbox waiting for it to arrive.

Erin later then opted for a less casual look and strutted at the All-Star game wearing a cream and orange belted pleated dress, Stuart Weitzman wedges and summery fish tail pony (pictured above).   I thought it was a little aggressive for the MLB All-Star game, which is such a laid back environment to begin with….but, then again, it was her first day and first impressions are everything. Want to replicate her look? This try this pleated dress from BCBG or C.Luce and pair it with these imitation Stuart Weitzman wedges from Target; adorbs!

To cap off our week, lets chat about the best and worst dressed of the ESPYS 2012. The ESPYS to the athletes, is the Oscars to actors; catch my drift? It’s kind of a big deal. Monica debriefed you yesterday on the award show and those who took home an award; if you missed her article, check it our here.

Not only were there winners on stage, but there were winners to be found on the red carpet.  Lets recap the best dressed, shall we?

Tim Tebow, my future boyfriend and back-up quarterback of the New York Jets, did not disappoint in this light grey fitted suit topped off with a lavender tie and pocket square. Well done Tebow….wondering if he did some Tebowing for my report. Next up is quarterback to the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers; also in a grey suit, however with black stripes. Aaron added a skinny tie in eggplant for a more trendy/edgy look; touchdown!

Now Maria Sharapova has disappointed me in the past with her irregular cut dresses and baby doll like silhouettes; this time, she did not disappoint. Maria ROCKED this maxi dress from the J. Mendel Resort 2013 collection. It’s flattering for her shape and height and the color is perfection;  she even took some time to learn how to smise from Tyra. Last, but certainly not least, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees. His two-tone suit, aka color blocking, is perfection! The suit fits him like a glove and who needs accessories when you have arm candy like that! I’m seeing a trend here….quarterbacks are 3 – 0.

Now on to the worst dressed of the evening……

It’s not that I don’t like Lindsey Vonn, I mean she was rumored to have been seeing Tim Tebow, it’s just there is something off here; I’m not mad at her, I’m mad at the dress. Lindsey is an Olympic athlete and has a some great legs; show them off! Dustin Penner, forward for the Stanley Cup winners, the LA Kings and fashion violator. I really don’t have much to say here other than your $4.2M salary can buy you a cap for the tooth and a new tie….that is all.

Oh Danica...why? In this instance, I’m mad at her AND the dress. Where to begin…the shape for someone of her petite stature is all wrong; the length should be shorter and the structure in the hips….gone. These pieces aren’t event the worst part….don’t get too close or you might get blinded by the shiny plastic material; maybe it can be recycled into a car part?  Finally, Anthony Davis, #1 draft pick in the NBA and former center for the National Champion Kentucky Wildcats. I really can’t look past his eyebrow (yes singular); note an eyebrow is not an accessory. If you are able to squint past it, you see more tragedy….you see a cream suit with white piping, paired with an olive checkered shirt. Maybe when his pay day comes, the Sportsanista will take him shopping.

Well folks, those are my thoughts and I’m sticking to them and signing off. Happy weekend!

Davis & Teague

Anthony Davis, store the Chicago native and star forward from the University of Kentucky, medical was the #1 draft pick by the New Orleans Hornets in the 2012 NBA Draft.  Equally as impressive as his agility on the court is his highly publicized unibrow.  Davis will now become a household name in sports thanks to his #1 draft status and his choice to market and cash-in on an otherwise horrendous grooming faux pas.

In other NBA Draft news, the Bulls with the 29th lottery pick, chose point guard, Marquis Teague, also from University of Kentucky.

What You Need to Know:

  • Only 60 players are chosen within 2 rounds of the NBA Draft.  The NBA Draft is different than other pro drafts as the teams that did not make the previous season’s playoffs enter a lottery system to secure the #1 pick.  The worst teams are weighted with a better chance to get the #1 pick.  After the 14 teams that did NOT make the playoffs are chosen in order for the lottery, the remaining 16 teams that DID make the playoffs are slotted in order of the win-loss regular season record – which is why the Bulls ended up with the 29th pick.
  • NBA Draftees must be either 19-years old to enter the draft and/or one year removed from high school.  This new rule was adopted in 2006.  Before 2006, players could enter the Draft straight from high school – a la LeBron James.
  • The 6’10” 19-year old Anthony Davis was expected to be the #1 pick for quite some time.  The New Orleans Hornets won the #1 pick and had the worst record in the 2011-12 NBA season winning 7 games and losing 59 (of a condensed 68 game season).

    Two famous unibrows

  • Davis is also known for his disgusting unibrow.  However, in lieu of waxing, Davis is preparing to cash in on the thing and has already trademarked the phrases “Raise the Brow” and “Fear the Brow.”  Davis told CNBC, “I don’t want anyone to try to grow a unibrow because of me and then try to make money off of it.” “Me and my family decided to trademark it because it’s very unique.”  Really?!
  • With their one and only pick in the draft, the Bulls chose point guard Marquis Teague, also from Kentucky.  As a 6’2″ 19-year old freshman, Teague is quick, agile and can easily get through defenders – but don’t expect him to play much his first year with the Bulls.  With Derrick Rose most likely out until January recovering from his torn ACL, John Lucas III or CJ Watson will get the nod for Rose before Teague.

    Marquis Teague

  • Marquis is the younger brother of Atlanta Hawks’ point guard, Jeff Teague.
  • Both Davis and Teague helped lead the Kentucky Wildcats to a National Championship in the NCAA Tournament this year against Kansas.  Kentucky put out 4-1st round draft picks last night.

Your Take Away Piece: “Teague was a good choice for the Bulls.  They need someone to play back-up point guard that won’t eat up a ton of salary.”

What’s Next:  Don’t expect to see Teague on the floor in November when the Bull’s season starts.  He’ll be considered a ‘rotation player’ and will get occasional bursts of time as he learns and gets better playing back-up to Watson or Lucas.
