All-Star Weekend

The NBA All Star break couldn’t come soon enough for Bulls fans (Pau Gasol just missed a layup as I write this), drugstore but for those whose teams are rolling this time of year, a weekend of outlandish events, more focused on Kevin Hart and over the top fashion than basketball, is not always welcome.  Lucky for them, despite taking the game north of the border to -8 degree Toronto temperatures, All-Star Saturday night delivered for everyone.  The big stars were still missing from the court, but Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon almost made us forget about the team dunk format of 2014 by putting on a true dunk contest reminiscent of the old school battles that featured the likes of Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins.

In the last 5 years, the dunk contest has lost the luster of those late 80s battles and the nostalgia of Vince Carter‘s prolific performances by serving up sub par dunks from role players while the All-Stars sat in the stands with their kids stealing most of the attention.  But this year,  Minnesota’s LaVine and Orlando’s Gordon took the NBA’s ultimate power move to new heights by pushing each other to perfect scores, round after round, forcing dunks even they had never seen or tried before.  LaVine and Gordon went beyond high flying dunks and 360s to new and improved moves like grabbing the ball from Stuff the Magic mascot while he spun on a hover board.

While LaVine came out victorious after perfect scores forced a bonus round, the most reality-defying dunk of the night came from Gordon when he leaped over Stuff (my second favorite mascot to Benny the Bull), grabbing the ball off of the pink wings on the side of his head, tucked his legs to a fully seated position and pulled the ball under them before slamming it down.

It’s hard to believe that didn’t seal the deal, but LaVine finally ended the night and took home the trophy with a spur of the moment decision to try a windmill dunk from the free throw line that he’d never even seen himself do.

The 2016 All-Star Weekend was a major stop of the Kobe Bryant retirement tour, with Saturday’s dunk contest coming 19 years after Kobe won the event in 1997.  Earlier in All-Star Saturday, Bryant expressed displeasure with the state of the contest, longing for the days when the NBA’s biggest stars participated.  And he wasn’t wrong, with the last All-Star caliber player to participate in a true dunk contest (disregarding whatever the NBA tried to do with the team format in 2014) being Blake Griffin in 2011 who won amid controversy that the league rigged the event to allow him and Kia, a major NBA sponsor, to win when he jumped over the hood of the automaker’s sedan.  And don’t ever forget that Lebron James has never shown his face on the court in the Dunk Contest for fear of injury or failure.

Nevertheless, the big stars weren’t necessary on Saturday, just the best dunkers, who were dedicated to bringing back an NBA tent-pole event by paying homage to those who brought it to prestige in the first place.  Zach LaVine said he came back in 2016 to defend his 2015 Slam Dunk title as a nod to the days when stars like Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins would compete year after year.  Aaron Gordon, born in 1995, still managed to throw it back to a staple Wilkins move from the late 80s, with a between the legs reverse dunk in an early round.

Dominique Wilkins has been another outspoken critic of the dunk contest in recent years, so if he says it, it goes…

Damien Lillard

This past weekend New Orleans was a fabulous melting pot of hoops and HOT fashion as NBA players, cialis celebrities and public figures alike came together to partake in various Big Easy festivities surrounding the annual All-Star Weekend.

There was so much fashion throughout the weekend that I’ve dedicated the entire Courtside Chic to highlighting some of the best – and worst – looks of the weekend. Let’s get to it.
Sprite All-Star Celebrity Game

The festive weekend kicked off on Friday, drugstore February 13th on TNT with the Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, prostate  where comedian Kevin Hart was voted  the MVP for the third consecutive year. He insisted, however, that Arne Duncan take the award because of his impressive double-double performance. The former Chicago Public School CEO definitely schooled everyone on the court with his 20 points, 11 assists and 6 rebounds.

kevin hart and drake

K. Hart was also spotted with Drake, sporting a Yves Saint Laurent top under a black leather jacket. The platinum selling rapper and Toronto Raptors brand ambassador opted for a laid-back look, wearing a Toronto Raptors T-Shirt and a snap-back hat.

Damian Lillard’s Hot Three Piece Suit

Damian Lillard is on fire! Sure, he became the first player to ever compete in five events. I understand that this is a big deal, but that fabulous suit is an even bigger deal! The 2013 Rookie of the Year was seen sporting a ALBA Legacy custom three-piece suit that looked like it was tailored by the gods themselves. The only thing that I love ore than an athlete in a suit…is an athlete in a custom suit.

Lillard competed in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge on Friday, the Taco Bell Skills Challenge, Foot Locker 3-Point Contest and Sprite Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday and the All-Star Game on Sunday.

Chris Bosh’s Clean-Cut Ensemble, Giant Birkin Bag

chris bosh all star weekend

At the Sear’s Shooting Stars event on Saturday, Team Bosh beat Team Durant and won the event at NBA All-Star Weekend for the second consecutive year. Chris Bosh, along with NBA great Dominique Wilkins and WNBA star Swin Cash finished with a time of 31.4 seconds in the finals, while Team Durant finished with a lagging 43.6 seconds.

The Sears Shooting Stars champ was seen sporting camo pants and a navy blue jacket with a perfectly pressed white button-up shirt. How much do you want to bet that Mario Chalmers is hiding in that giant Birkin bag?

Paul George’s Zorro Inspired Outfit

I was just waiting for Paul George to pull out a sword and use it to formulate the letter ‘Z’. The Pacers guard’s Zorro inspired ensemble was from Phenom 247 Clothing.

Anthony Davis’ Suit and Kicks

Anthony Davis was selected as a replacement for Kobe Bryant this weekend. I must say, he is really starting to step up from his ‘jeans and hoodie’ getup. The New Orleans forward/center styled a tan suit with ‘Olive’ Air Jordan 9 sneakers. By the way…stop making fun of his eye brows. They’re here to stay.

Kevin Durant in Phenom247

Now…you know that I cannot talk about NBA fashion without mentioning Kevin Durant. KD executes effortless style, even in fabulous suits. Here, he rocks two custom Phenom247 suits.

Lebron’s GQ Bash

Guess who is gracing the cover of March’s issue of GQ? It is none other than LeBron James. What better time to celebrate than All Star Weekend? Athletes and celebrities brought their impeccable style to the celebration. Is it me…or does everything seem to be coming up ‘LeBron?’

Even President Obama spoke wonders about James during a TNT interview with Charles Barkley.

“You know LeBron, I know LeBron,” Obama said. “When you’re standing next to him and then watch him close up, I’ve never seen someone that size, that fast, who can jump that high, who’s that strong…Mike [Jordan] will always be the guy for me just because that was a magical moment for the city and he was a champion. But now that he’s retired, LeBron…might be able to play at a high level for another seven, eight, 10 years…”  (SB Nation)

Don’t LeBron and Savannah James look like they belong on top of a wedding cake? LeBron rocked a unique turquoise, paisley jacket with black lapels and Savannah looks beautiful and chic in a flower-patterned lace top with long, flowing, black gown.

By the way…is that a baby bump that I’m seeing? When the James’ make their baby announcement…remember you heard it here first!

dwayne wade and gabrielle union

I still need to think of a cute combo-name for Dwyane and Gabby. Anyway, the recently engaged couple looked Fab in black with Gabby in an embellished black dress and Dwyane in a three-piece suit.

Pharrell’s All Star Sunday Pregame Performance

(USA Today)

Ladies and gentlemen…Pharrell’s Hat! Oh, and Pharrell was there too. The hat and the hit-maker gave a wave-making, pre-game performance along with Snoop, Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs and Busta Rhymes.

Kyrie Irving named All-Star MVP

After a close fourth quarter, the East ultimately dominated in a 163-155 win. Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving was named All-Star MVP. The point guard scored 31 points and 14 assists. He did it all in his green Nike All-Star kicks!

Well, I had a fabulous time watching the All-Star events. I’m kind of bummed that it’s over. Nonetheless, I will be back next week to keep you fabulously posted with more NBA Style. Until then, Divas!

Courtside Chic LeBron James’ Super Bowl Weekend Ensemble

The NYC area was filled with various NBA ballers last week attending pre-Super Bowl events. Miami Heat’s LeBron James was one of many movers and shakers spotted at the Marquee Club in New York City. The four-time MVP kept his NYC style simple by pairing a black sweater with wax denim pants. Honestly, medicine this is the Super Bowl in NYC. For such a fashion-forward baller like LeBron, I was expecting something a lot edgier, like some nerdy glasses or a glow-in-the-dark chain. But, no such luck. Leave it to LeBron to keep everyone guessing.

There was nothing eh about King James’ performance against the Pistons on Monday night. The forward scored 24 points (on 9-for-19 shooting), 11 assists. This includes an epic one-handed alley-oop that he caught from Mario Chalmers. The Heat currently sit in second place in the East, 3 1/2 games behind the division leading Indiana Pacers.

Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Russell Wilson Sit Courtside at the Nets Game

Being that I am a ‘Single lady’ who believes that ‘Girls Run the World,’ it is no surprise that I am a huge Beyoncé fan (which is why I will rip annoying quotes and various lyrics throughout my posts). Bey and her hubby (rapper, agent and former Nets minority owner) Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter sat court side at the Nets game against the Sixers on Monday Night.

Jay kept it cool and casual in a grey hoodie, while Beyoncé sported a Karl Lagerfeld wool biker jacket. Beyoncé has already stated that she is a “Grown Woman” that can do whatever she wants. This includes accesorizing with mouse-ear pom poms. The adorable beanie is a Eugenia Kim Knit Pom Pom hat. Sitting next to the power couple is none other that Seattle Seahawks Quarterback and, hello, SuperBowl Champ Russell Wilson.  If that is not a dynamic trio…I don’t know what is.

I guess the Nets knew that they had special company. Brooklyn was able to snag a win (108-102) as they recovered from the brutal beating they got from OKC on Friday and Indiana on Saturday. Paul Pierce sank 25 points while Shaun Livingston came close to a quadruple-double, scoring 13 points with eight assists, six rebounds and a career-high seven steals.

In other Nets News: Coach, and former NBA player, Jason Kidd was honored Coach of the Month on Monday. The Nets went 10-3 in January, which is a franchise  record for that month.

Nike Reveals NBA All-Star Sneakers

NBA All-Star week is almost here! It will take place from February 14-16 in New Orleans. All-Star Week is not complete without the NBA unveiling signature footwear. Since the All-Star festivities will take place in the Big Easy, Nike recently showcased ‘gumbo’ themed sneakers.

LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant will be sporting glow-in-the-dark, New Orleans inspired editions of their signature sneaks. Kobe Bryant will not get to wear his shoes, as he is sidelined due to his knee injury. He may be on the bench, but at least his sneakers will glow in the dark–in case there is a blackout or something.

The All-Star starters from the east are Dwyane Wade, Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. The starters from the west are Stephen Curry, Kobe Bryant (New NBA comissioner Adam Silver will determine Bryant’s replacement) , Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin and Kevin Love. I know what you are thinking. What about Joakim Noah? At least that’s what you should be thinking. Our dear Jojo is on reserve. Booo!

Lala Anthony’s Chanel Logo Clutch

Courtside Chic post is not complete without a fabulous NBA WAG. Lala Anthony seems to be slaying it week after week (after week). While at a book signing for, The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex and Happiness, she posed for an instagram photo with a fabulous white Chanel lego clutch. Lala is a style all-star in my eyes. Her husband Carmelo, on the other hand, is simply an all-star.

Melo will suit up for the East in the 2014 All- Star game on the February 16th.

Although there have been rumors about him excercising his early-termination option and leaving the Knicks, Melo has been mum about the whole issue. Now, it is clear that the only thing he is focused on is winning. The Knicks are currently one game behind the Charlotte Bobcats in making the playoffs. Can Melo win with a team that is struggling to hang on to the 8th seed? Only time will tell…because Melo certainly won’t!

That is all for now! I will be back to dish out all of the juicy gossip and scrutinize all of the fashion during All-Star Weekend. I don’t know about you, but I am excited! As always, I will keep you fabulously posted.
