Gossip

If you don’t know the name Rafael Nadal, no rx we don’t know what you’ve been missing. The tennis player just earned his ninth French Open title yesterday in a repeat of last year’s final versus Novak Djokovic, illness making the 28-year-old clay legend (he’s got a 63-1 record!) our HAM of the Week.

Rafa”, as he is known to his legion of fans, is the current world #1, and he’s aced his way into our hearts. He’s a sexy and single Spaniard who has won more than 50 titles in his 13 years of turning pro—what more can we love about our HAM of the Week?

For starters, he is only one of two singles players (behind tennis legend Andre Agassi) to complete a Career Golden Slam, meaning he has won the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open, in addition to the Olympic gold medal (which he won in 2008) in the span of his career.

He’s also an avid soccer fan, having played the sport when he was young in addition to tennis. Though he chose to focus on the latter, he still supports Real Madrid and RCD Mallorca as well as the Spanish national team, fitting for the World Cup, which begins this week.

Turning pro at 15, Nadal participated in events at the junior and senior circuits, winning his first major senior match on the ATP circuit just before he turned 16. But it wasn’t until the following year that he faced current rival Roger Federer at Wimbledon.

By 19, Nadal won his first French Open title in his first appearance at the event, the first man to win the title since 1982. He went on to win the tournament the next three times.

Injury sidelined Nadal in 2012, but he’s obviously emerged as the reigning king of the (clay) court, quite possibly making him one of the best tennis players of all time.

If Nadal ever reaches a final in a tournament, you can bet he’s either going against Djokovic or Federer, the other two players who seem to be challenging Nadal for the best of the best. Nadal has faced Djokovic more than 40 times, with about half of those matches faced in the final round. Nadal has faced Federer 33 times, with 20 of those matches faced in the final.

According to his autobiography, while he does have a game plan against Federer, he’s still looking for one against Djokovic.

We’re not sure about Rafa’s constant habit of biting his trophies, but wow, it makes him so much sexier…

And it’s not everyday that you have an asteroid named after you. According to ATP World Tour, the asteroid is located between Mars and Jupiter and travels through space at 20 kilometers per second. Talk about star power.

Nadal is also charitable; his organization, Fundacion Rafa Nadal, provides educational programs for deprived children and teenagers through sports.

The one sport he’s not good at? Golf. But we’d rather have a superstar with 15 major Grand Slam titles to his name on the tennis court than anywhere else.

As a spokesman for Nike, Nadal also has a collection with the retailer, and has also emerged as a somewhat fashion icon. At just over 6 feet, he seems to be all muscle and pure heart.

Not to mention, being photographed by famed photographer Bruce Weber for the June 2009 issue of Vogue:

Catch up with Rafa at Wimbledon, which starts Monday, June 23. Follow Rafael Nadal on Twitter at @RafaelNadal (he tweets in Spanish and English!) and at www.rafaelnadal.com.

mcillroy_wozniacki_broke_up_over_phone_600

The French Open tennis Grand Slam began with early round play a couple days ago and a summary of who’s in and who’s out (e.g. what happened Serena?) will be coming out soon. Plus, cheap you won’t want to miss my notoriously wrong picks. But the big story now is what has happened off the court.

This has been a busy time for gossiping golfers and tennis players. The huge headline is that our favorite sports power couple Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki have broken up just weeks after their wedding invitations had been sent out. The big question was who will recover first?

This past week it has become very apparent on who is struggling and who is not. Rory recovered so strong that he won the BMW PGA Championship in Virginia Water, England on Sunday. He finished out his winning round with a birdie and seemed to find an escape from his personal drama out on the course. However we must keep in mind Rory was the one to break off the engagement (over the phone!) so we cannot help but wonder if this was somewhat of a weight lifted off of his shoulders.

However for Caroline it seems like the weight of the world is crashing down on her!

In her first round at the French Open she had a pretty tough first-round draw. She had to face off against number 64 ranked Yanina Wickmayer. Wozniacki was ranked number 12 and it seemed like she should win without issue, but Wickmayer is an excellent player who was once ranked number 12 and was a semifinalist at the 2009 United States Open. We also need to remember that Wozniacki has had a season filled with injuries. She has endured injuries to her wrist and knee and has not been fully focused on her tennis career.

So the big question remains, was it the breakup that accounts for her loss? Or is it the slew of other factors? With a final score of 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2, Wozniacki is out of the French Open in the first round and questions came flying. She responded: “I don’t really want to talk about my personal life.” She has admitted to the breakup being a bit of a shock and we know that that must have some affect one her personally.

Our hearts go out to Caroline Wozniacki and we hope she will recover from her heartbreak.

A big shout out and thanks to Smashing intern and Lehigh University golfer Nicole Feierberg for the research for this article.

Playoffs are here…bring on the fashion.

Hello Divas! I missed all of you oh so dearly. I know it’s been a while, mind but I am back…just in time for the NBA Playoffs!

It is a wonderful time in the NBA where the game–and the fashion–is intensified.

During the Playoffs, health wood can become headgear and lint rollers can act as accessories. There are hits. There are misses. There are downright shames. I’m here for all three. Let’s get into it, cheap shall we?

NBA on TNT Honor Craig Sager with Sartorial Fashion

If you are an avid basketball watcher, you have definitely seen one of Craig Sager’s bold suits on the sidelines of major games. The TNT reporter is currently being treated for acute leukemia in Atlanta.

In honor of Sager, The NBA on TNT crew channeled their inner Sager and dressed up like him.  Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal sported eye-popping ensembles while wishing him a speedy recovery.

Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Deron Williams go Business Casual

BmREUmQCYAAadx5

Brooklyn Nets star players Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Deron Williams were recently seen rocking pre-game business casual ensembles. They looked dapper as they made their pregame strut into the locker rooms.

Although the series against the Raptors is tied 2-2, Kevin Garnett tells reporters that he is not impressed with the Barclays Center crowd.

“They could do better,” Garnett said, as reported by ESPN. “I was expecting Brooklyn to be real hostile, New York-style. I know what it’s like to come here as the opposition, so our crowd could do better, but they were there when we needed them, and we fed off of them.” (Fox Sports)

Mike Conley’s Wooden Fedora

mikeconleyhatQuestion. When did wood become a fashion statement? I am going to go out on a limb and say that Mike Conley would know. The Memphis point guard got everyone’s attention with his wooden head gear. The carpenter’s dream of a hat was an epic collaboration between Conley’s stylist Brandon Williams and Two Guys Bow Ties.

Mike Conley is one of the few people on this earth that can pull this look off. He manages to look swag-ulous even while rocking a hard-wood flooring on his head. That takes talent. Okay. I have another serious question. Does a wooden hat require an occasional pine-sol cleaning? I need to know these things.

One thing that I do know is that Mike and Grizzlies are putting up a fight! Memphis is currently tied 2-2 with Oklahoma City.

Andre Iguodala in Animal Print

Andre Iguodala

Lions and tigers and blue leopard print–oh my. Andre Iguodala was seen sporting a powder- blue leopard print sweater. The Golden State small forward/shooting guard’s style is always on point. I’m glad that his on-court style is finally catching up. On Sunday’s Game 4 against the Clippers, he scored 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists–an improvement on his average 9.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

“I found some things they were trying to take away from Steph and Klay (Thompson) and was putting myself in position to be a threat” Iguodala said. “We’re going to continue to look forward and try to make things happen.” (SF Gate) The Warriors are currently tied with the Clippers 2-2.

Drake attends Raptors Game

PJT-RapsVsNets-32.jpg

Drake is certainly putting Toronto on the map! Ever since the Canadian recording artist (and 2014 ESPYS host) became the Raptors’ global ambassador, everything’s been coming up ‘Canada.’ This is the first time that the Toronto Raptors have made the playoffs in six years. Toronto will also be hosting the 2015 All-Star game.  Big deal, much? Drake is very vocal (and visual) about his love for the Raptors. He has made himself comfortable at the games . Comfortable enough to roll lint. No, that statement is not a euphemism. He was literally using a lint roller on his pants during a game. When he’s not making his clothing lint-free, he is busy yelling at referees.

Brooklyn Nets v Toronto Raptors - Game Two

Oh, Drake. You never cease to slay me.

Well, that’s it for now, Divas! I will be back next week to talk about more Playoffs Fashion and Gossip. As usual, I will keep you fabulously posted!

Miss me? Yeah, try cialis I took a little break from writing about all-things idiotic. I got caught up with new clients and working and, you know, maintaining my livelihood. Blah. But you guys are never too far from my heart, and I’ve been keeping a diligent eye on the happenings of stupid people, places and things in the sports world. Ready? Let’s do this.

The Knicks’ awful season is over and they’re still making us laugh

Some genius decided to put together a “One Shining Moment” video for the New York Knicks season and I literally laughed out loud for for two minutes and 33 seconds straight. I especially loved the ending montage of Mike Woodson faces. You know, those faces he makes on the sidelines – usually invoked by something J.R. Smith did. But then I stopped laughing for a second because I realized he was probably gonna get fired and it’s not nice to laugh at unemployed people, even if they are rich…ok, still laughing.

What would you pay $14,100 for?

I’ve been pondering this question ever since I saw this Hermes baseball glove that, at this point in time, is more valuable than my 2009 Elantra. I envisioned something that had conflict-free diamonds lining the outer rims of the fingers. Maybe chinchilla fur stitching instead of the normal cotton. Maybe some 24 karat gold trim somewhere. And then I saw it.

Would you pay $14,100 for this? Photo credit: Hermes

Really? This is it? A brown baseball glove? Where are the bells and whistles? The diamonds? The Swarovski crystal encrusted baseball that comes with it? There’s not even any gold in that thing. I’m disappointed. I’m sure it’s the most luxurious leather in all of Italy. But, no. Hermes: C-.

We’re getting married!! On reality television!!

Say what you want about the reality show, but that ring is flawless. Kudos, A.J. Photo credit: Ring Envy

This is what the world has come to: a college quarterback (A.J. McCarron) proposes to his former beauty queen girlfriend (Katherine Webb) and they get a reality show to commemorate the occasion. I’m saying it right now; if any of my friends have weddings where I have to sign a release to enter the building, I’m not fucking going OR buying you a gift. BURN.

Single moms flirt with hot college football coach

Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury is 34 and single. In his own words, you’ve got to “play to your strengths.”

Do I need to say more?

Turns out, good things do come from Indiana

Yes. I’m judging that outfit. Photo credit: TheJayGravesReport.com

And it just so happens to be an Indiana Pacers fan with a great sense of humor. I’m not going to lie; I rarely watch the NBA. But I know that Paul George was really good for a while. Apparently, not so much anymore. A fan put an add on Craigslist for George’s missing talent.

Hey maybe a Cubs fan could put an ad up for missing wins or good players or something.

Too soon?

What do you get when you combine carnival games, shop a dunk tank, medical and a performance from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony? Why, an NBA birthday bash of course!

Chris Bosh recently celebrated his 30th birthday with fabulous style!  Adrienne Bosh threw her hubby a “Cirque du Noir” themed party at Marlins Park. The Miami Power Forward/Center was all smiles in his gold tuxedo jacket and black mask. Many of his teammates were present during the extravagant birthday celebration.

What can I say? The Miami Heat certainly needed a day at the circus. After losing seven out of eleven games, the Miami Heat was able to snag a win against the Portland Trailbrazers on Monday night (93-91).

“It’s always good to have something like [Bosh’s party] in the middle of the season, whether you’re winning or losing,” LeBron James said after the win. “It definitely helps with losing, to get your mind off it.” (ESPN)

Dahntay Jones For Ebony Magazine

Dahntay Jones

I have never been jealous of a man’s shoe collection. Well, that was before Dahntay Jones’ Ebony magazine feature. I am not a sneaker head, but I felt a twitch of shoe envy amid the Nike Foamposite kicks, Christian Louboutin, Balenciaga and Lanvin.

As part of its “Sneakerhead Closet Confessions,” the April issue of Ebony magazine gives readers a peek inside of his walk-in closet. His style wonderland features 450+ pairs of shoes. Let me repeat myself. His style wonderland features 450+ pairs of shoes. One day, my heel closet will be on that level. One day.

Paul George’s Leather Ensemble

source: @paul_george24

Not only did Paul George and the Pacers get slaughtered by the Chicago Bulls on Monday, but he also slaughtered 17 cows for his post game ensemble. The Indianapolis small forward/shooting guard recently shared a photo of his all-leather ensemble with his 671K Instagram followers.

After their 89-77 loss, the Pacers have dropped three of their last four games. Ouch. Things are looking quite grim for the Pacers, but at least Paul George is handling business off the court with his daring fashion!

That’s it for now, Divas! I will most definitely be back to give you the hottest news in NBA fashion/gossip. As always, I will keep you fabulously posted!
