2012-mlb-playoffs-miguel-cabrera-detroit-tigers-oakland-as

With NFL and college football dominating the headlines, one could easily forget that we are already into the second round of the MLB Playoffs.  After an incredibly exciting Division Series that saw 3 of the 4 series go to 5 games, and teams that dominated their divisions all season long be eliminated by wild card winners, there are now 4 teams remaining in the Championship Series (the 2nd of the 3 rounds of playoffs): The New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, St.

The White Sox ended the 2012 season with a 9-0 rout of the Cleveland Indians Wednesday night. The Sox were in control from the second inning on thanks to the bat of Dan Johnson as they earned their 85th win of the year, exceeding the win total predicted by many early critics by about 10 games.

The Sox fell for the 10th time in their last 12 games, the most recent by a score of 6-2 Sunday night. The Sox now trail the Detroit Tigers by 3 games with  only three games left to play in the regular season.

After an exhausting 162-regular game season, playoff baseball in October is the highly anticipated finale that spotlights the best teams of the season and draws casual fans back in.  While Chicago has been denied a playoff team in the last 5 post seasons (last Chicago team to make the Playoffs were the Sox in 2008), the Sox are in a good position to clinch the AL Central and return to the post season for the first time in 5 years.

Royals vs Oakland

The White Sox seemed primed to take a 3-game lead over the Tigers around the fifth inning of Thursday’s game in Kansas City. But with 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th, Francisco Liriano, who had only allowed one hit over the first 4+ innings, gave up 2 runs and another run in the 6th preventing him from his 7th win of the year.
