Derrick Rose dug himself a dirty and deep hole on Tuesday after speaking honestly about why he’s been sitting out so frequently this season. I’m sure Miss Brenda (his mama) raised him to believe honesty is the best policy, online but Rose is not the most articulate dude on the court and could have saved himself loads of backlash had he used a bit more tact. Instead he crushed a few Bulls fans’ souls.
If you missed the recent grumblings here’s what went down. We are all too familiar with how fragile Derrick Rose is on the court and lately it seems like the poor guy blinks and he tweaks an ankle. The entire city of Chicago gets frustrated watching our MVP on the bench night after night so on Tuesday Rose explained to ESPN’s Nick Friedell exactly what is going through his mind as he sits out of games:
And insert Chicago fans outrage…YIKES.
Here’s my opinion on the whole situation, try take it or leave it I don’t mind.
I think Rose was trying to explain his new perspective on his game, looking to better himself and his health in the future. There is always life after basketball to consider and I think he wants to be comfortable when that day comes. However, no one wants to hear about the “meetings” he’ll be attending after he’s done being a star NBA player. Last time I checked I have zero vertical, can barely jump on the first step of the stair stepper and I can strut myself into a conference room just FINE. People need Rose to remind us that he is a crazy passionate basketball player and wants to win a title for his city. Make us BULLieve D.
As the selfish Bulls fan that I am, I know we need our star point guard healthy in May and June because this is the first year Chicago could fight their way into the finals. The Bulls are a DEEP team and can absolutely win games right now without DRose if he has two bum ankles. Staying healthy is the name of the game so I say sit yourself on that bench at the moment Mr. Rose.
I think people have absolutely blown this quote out of proportion and all the haters are going to jump right back on the DRose bandwagon come playoffs if he’s crushing point guards on the court. Unless you’re an NBA point guard who has had two reconstructed knees, I don’t think we have any idea where Rose is truly coming from. He lives his life under constant scrutiny from the media and I can’t even imagine how challenging that must be. So cut the guy some slack. As long as he plays with his same intensity on the court when he is ready to go, who cares what his goals are for later in life? I think the outlook shows a sense of maturity.
To be completely honest, the most tragic part of this current situation is Derrick’s need for a better media relations person. Less is seriously more dude. He could have said, “I’m sitting out to make sure I’m healthy now and in the future.” Boom, done and over with. I mean, I’m available for hire if you need me Derrick.
