With the official kickoff of the 2014 Winter Olympics on Friday night, our city has many good reasons to tune-in this year. Not only are Chicagoans representing our city as Olympians in the majority of the key sports during the two week international competition, but ten (yes, ten!) of our very own Chicago Blackhawks will be participating this year in Sochi.
Blackhawks fans around the country will be tuning in over the next two weeks to watch their favorite players compete on the world’s biggest stage – against one another. Before we get to “where to go” and “what to wear” let’s discuss three important details to supporting our cute Canucks and sexy Swedes…
#1- How is Olympic Hockey different than the NHL?
The world is watching, but to impress your favorite NHL aficionados cross check these: The Team: International games allow a maximum of 20 skaters and 2 goaltenders on each team (NHL allows 18 and 2). The Fight: Players fighting in International or Olympic hockey receive a match penalty and are ejected from the game for fighting (NHL penalizes with a 5 minute penalty).
#2- Which Blackhawks are playing and for what countries?
|SWEDEN||Marcus KrugerNiklas Hjalmarsson- DefenseJohnny Oduya|
|SLOVAKIA||Marian Hossa-Forward, Michal Handzus-Forward|
|CZECH REPUBLIC||Michal Rozsival-Defenseman|
#3- Where can you see your favorite player against your favorite player – Hawk vs Hawk?!?
February 12th: 11:00am (CST) – Czech Republic vs Sweden (Michal Rozsival vs Marcus Kruger, Niklas Hjalmarsson and Johnny Oduya)
February 13th: 6:30am (CST) – USA vs Slovakia (Patrick Kane vs Marian Hossa and Michal Handzus)
Dates to Track: February 19th: Quarterfinal, February 21st: Semifinal, February 22nd: Bronze Medal Game, and February 23rd: Gold Medal Game.
With a 10-hour time difference between Chicago and Sochi, you’re going to need to hit up one of Chicago’s favorite daytime pubs to catch the live action (check out Crossroads, The Pony INN and Lotties) or wait until prime-time for the bigger games, but just be careful of the spoiler alerts.
Now, every woman knows it can be hard to look hot when you are out and about in Chicago Mid-February, but you’ll be sure to impress with these fun looks and your new Olympic hockey knowledge.
